Re: Secret Garden Tam **with pattern**

Love Secret Garden! I never realized how badly I want her hat before. I need to get some size 4 circs! Oh, and I have a question. I only have 16" circs, but I'm assuming with the amount of stitches it gets up to I would need longer, right? Would 24" be...

Rebecca Roberts' Fabric Paintings

rebeccaroberts.jpg

My jaw dropped when I saw these fabric "paintings" by Rebecca Roberts. I'm about to start my second quilt, and they have given me a huge jolt of inspiration and the nudge to try something a little more free-form. These aren't quilts -- they're sewn pieces laid over a stretcher, like a painting -- but they are pure delight for anyone interested in textiles, color, and form. She says:

Having learned sewing as a young girl, working with it as a "painting" medium feels natural to me. Each painting begins with the relationship between two or three fabrics - their color, texture or pattern. The painting develops as I take the pieces of fabric apart (by cutting) and put them back together (by sewing) over and over again ... The painting changes dramatically when I stretch it over the stretcher. This process is just as important to me as sewing the pieces together. I'm interested in the tension on the seams and the changes that happen to the shapes.

Oh, what I would give to see these in person! (Via Red Jet Whistle.)

How-To: Amigurumi Link, from Legend of Zelda

ami_link.jpg

This adorable amigurumi version of Link from the Legend of Zelda video games is a collaborative effort. First came this pattern for Link, which was written by Becchin, a Japanese amigurimi artist. It was then translated to English by Tanoshimou.

Then, Stephanie at All About Ami found the pattern and designed a Hyrulian shield and sword to go with it. (For anyone unfamiliar with the game franchise, Hyrule is Link's homeland, and the sword and shield figure prominently in his many quests.)

...Those who are familiar with the games are likely jumping up and down right now. I know I am!

May Birthday Giveaway: The Butcher and the Vegetarian

[1]

About this: My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I'm giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I'm thrilled to have a copy of Tara Austen Weaver's [2] book The Butcher and the Vegetarian [3] to give away. I read this book when it first came out and I'm running late as I type this so I hope you don't mind if I quote myself [4]:

Tara takes us through the time in her life when she, raised a vegetarian, is advised to take up eating meat to help solve some chronic health troubles. The stories of her trying to figure out how to buy and cook meat are both hilarious and filled with a thoughtful exploration of how to balance the personal and environmental ethics of eating meat. She gets very close to the subject, visiting ranches and farms that are gentle to both the land and the animals, going through some of Michael Pollen?s arguments and spending a day at Meathenge. She finds some very good food and people. Tara doesn?t take any more virtuous than thou stances, and approaches each question looking fairly at all sides. That makes it sound boring, I admit, but I assure you it?s not, the book takes a journey that moves along briskly. I love it when I find an author whose words ring very clear in my head, and Tara is one of those.

If you'd like grab this book please leave a comment with this post. And if you'd like answer this question: Have you ever made a big change in how you eat? I'll go first: In the past few years I've been eating what would be considered healthy and I discovered that it's far more delicious than processed food, something I admit I would not have believed before I made the switch. Ok, you've got until 10 a.m. PST Saturday, May 7th to enter, the fine print [5] applies, good luck! Closed! Thank you for entering!

May Birthday Giveaway: jewelry from Dave Sheely Designs

[1]

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I've got two pairs of earrings and one hilarious ring from Dave Sheely Designs [2] for one lucky person. Dave knows his resins and uses only the highest quality in his jewelry, they don't discolor over time, don't shatter, and are scratch resistant (which means a bright orange ring I have of his has stayed as lovely and shiny as the day Scott gifted it to me!). Each of his pieces is hand colored and polished, and since Dave is a friend I can tell you a whole lot of care goes into each one. His designs combine bright colors and a sense of humor and often incorporate beach glass or tiny objects meticulously placed, take a look at his Floating Red Gemstone [3], or the Crystal Esther Ring [4] to see some of my favorites. Today I've got two pairs of textured earrings, one set of orange discs and one set of teal shapes (these earrings are super lightweight, I've held some), and one "Ring Finger Ring" (size 9) which is made to flip and point on it's own. Oh gosh that is so weird, I want one.

If you'd like to win this fabulous set of jewelry from Dave Sheely Designs please leave a comment with this post and, if you'd like something to talk about, answer this question: Have you ever lost a favorite piece of jewelry? I have, in high school I had a favorite chunky silver ring that held a particular sort of teenage symbolism for me. I lost it in the dressing room of a TJ Maxx while trying on prom dresses. I was heartbroken. Ever since then I tend to obsessively check to make sure my jewelry is in place (and it's also one big reason I didn't want a real diamond in my engagement/wedding ring). Ok, you've got until Wednesday, May 25th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [5] applies, good luck! Closed, thanks so much for entering!

Crafting Your Online Presence: Being Original (Advice from the Maker Faire Panels)

Banner Dianegilleland Column

crafting_online_presence_mfpanel.jpg

Wowee! The two Crafting Your Online Presence panels at Maker Faire were amazing. All kinds of great wisdom issued from the minds of our esteemed panelists - too much, in fact, to capture in a single column here. So I'll be drawing on what happened in these discussions over the next few months.

Today, I want to look at the biggest theme that emerged in these panels: the importance of originality and passion. You may have heard and read the phrase "blog about your passions" so many times at this point, it seems to have no meaning at all. And yet, this idea is so central to creating a successful online presence. So let's see if we can get beneath the surface and find some tips you can use.

Antique Doll Head Planters

doll_head_planters1.jpg

Retired high school art teacher Dolores Duenez makes interesting (and slightly unnerving) planters out of antique doll heads.

A few years ago, I was given a box of unfinished doll heads from a doll maker's estate sale. I used some of the heads for still-life set ups in the classroom, and the rest I placed in my garden. The following spring, plants were growing from the doll heads. I decided then that doll heads would make strange and interesting planters.

She sells them in her Etsy shop, Plants on the Brain.

Old Books Make Room Dividers

paperback_partition_6_normal.jpg

This is a beautiful idea for a rather hidden waste problem. From London designer Lucy Norman:

"More books are printed every year, read and discarded. Even though many are taken to charity shops, they mostly go unsold and the charities have to pay for the books to be sent to landfill. For example 10,000 books a week from one charity will go to waste. There is currently no infrastructure set up to recycle the paper from books because the paper is low grade and the glue on the spine must be removed. The Paperback Partition is made from this waste, creating an aesthetically pleasing and interesting divide in a room. It provides both good heat insulation, and acoustic insulation. Research showed that most people felt that books as objects were beautiful and they enjoyed their solidness, colour and texture, which the partition shows off"

I also love the subtle tone-on-tone mosaic created by the books all being at different stages of yellowing. See other book partition styles over at Lula Dot.

May Birthday Giveaway: Made By Moxie

Today I have a wee finger puppet made by the amazing Moxie [1] for one lucky person. Moxie is a fiber artist and needle felting wool by hand is her usual (but not only) medium. She creates breathtakingly amazing sculptures, both large and small, some are lifelike and some hilarious while at the same time a bit heartbreaking. You can see some of her most recent work on her site: icons & totems & pieces of the past [2], a recent show in NYC, and her sets Hungry [3] and Hungry 2 [4] are hilarious. If you're interested in learning to needle felt keep an eye on her schedule, she teaches classes.

If you'd like win this sweet bit of the genius please leave a comment with this post. If you don't mind I'd love to know: Have you ever tried needle felting? I have, but I'm afraid it'll take a lot more practice for it to become something that could be called presentable. How-To: Toy Animal Rack

Style starts at home, and your home should be filled with things that make you happy. Nothing makes me happier than animals of all kinds, so I incorporate them into my home decor as much as possible. It's starting to look like a jungle in here! Today we add another rad element with my toy animals racks.

Animal Rack-5.jpg

I found these adorable little animal figurines at an art store, and upon seeing Anthropologie's white ceramic animal hooks, I wanted to do the same using my small creatures. Then I came across Steph Mantis's and couldn't believe my eyes. This was exactly what I pictured. You can purchase one of Steph Mantis's racks or make your own with me as shown in today's video! I also wrote up a detailed step-by-step over on Make: Projects.

Animal Rack-3.jpg

One of the coolest things about this project (aside from the fact that it is adorable!) is that it is perfect to customize. My brother-in-law loves dinosaurs, so I could do a whole rack of different dinos for him. Or I could do barnyard animals for my little nephew Aidan, or just dogs for my husband who is obsessed with all things canine.

The dowels make the animals interchangeable, so you can switch them up for the season or mood. What animals would you include? Leave in a comment and enjoy the video! Laser-cut t-rex skull necklace by Sleek & Destroy.

Subscribe to the CRAFT Podcast in iTunes, download the m4v video directly, or watch it on YouTube.

1930s Scalloped Collar Tutorial

30s_scalloped_collar.jpg

I really like the elegant and simple look of this 30s-style scalloped collar. The tutorial is on Elegant Musings, appropriately enough.

This looks like it should be an outfit in the film Fried Green Tomatoes.

Geek Crafts: Geeky Jewelry

CRAFT: Geek Crafts

geek_jewelry_morph1.jpg

If there's one craft that's fun to do with a geeky mindset, it's jewelry-making. All those little components and needle-nose tools just seem to lend themselves well to good geekery. Here's a roundup of some adornments we've featured that truly earn the name "geeky."

Laser Cut DNA Necklace, from Morphologica. (That's also a Morphologica design at the top of the post.)

Think Outside the Basket this Easter

There are many clever ways to pack up toys and treats besides the traditional wicker basket. Make a bunny bag, use a straw hat, recycle a shoe box, etc.

Bakesale for Japan tomorrow

[1]

It's 11 p.m. and I'm just finishing my baked goods for the Bakesale for Japan tomorrow. I'm fond of what I made and might have to buy one for myself since I didn't have any left over. I made Jars of Stars, lots of little star shaped cookies. (Pictures later.) It took a bit longer than I anticipated, but I think it was worth it. Here in Seattle it will be at the Cakespy shop (more details [2]). See the Bakesale for Japan [3] page to find if there is one being held near you.

I've got a few days worth of photos to put up but I'm tired and need to pack for a few days of travel, so I'll be back on Monday and catch up then. Hope your weekend is wonderful.

Recipe: Basic Chicken Salad

In the Kitchen

recipe-basicchickensalad-finalimage.jpg

By Katie Goodman

I love making chicken salad for a simple summer meal or to use throughout the week for lunches. Chicken salad goes great on top of salad greens, wrapped in a tortilla with lettuce or spinach, or inside bread for a yummy sandwich.

Here is my go-to basic chicken salad recipe. The flavors are simple, but you can add anything to it you like. Some ideas are halved grapes, walnuts or pecans, and dried cranberries.

Taco Truck Chorizo Sopito

taco_truck_recipe.jpg

Anything "taco truck" grabs my attention these days. We have a great taco truck here in Detroit, Jacques' Tacos, that I try to stop by on Saturday afternoons. Just to the south of me in Columbus, Rachel Tayse, of Hounds in the Kitchen, recreated a recipe for one of her favorite taco truck creations from Taqueria Jalisco - chorizo sopito. Check out her recipe to learn how to make it for yourself.
