Fiskars has a list of ideas for some quick, paper-related Fourth of July crafts good for just about any skill set or event you have going on this weekend. Needlework on Breakfast Foods

egg_on_toast_embroidery3.jpg.430x430_q85.jpg

Cereal_sampler.jpg

"Toast Embroidery" and "Cereal Sampler" were made by Judith Klausner as part of a series called, "From Scratch."

Like the production of food, a variety of handicrafts were a mundane requirement of the female gender. Today, as we come to realize that something has been lost in the mechanization of everything around us, there is a return to the idea that making something from its most basic parts has great value.

How-To: Nature Explorer Bag

explorer_bag.jpg

My kids love to pick up and bring home loads of treasures from our adventures on the beach and strolls through the neighborhood. The only trouble with all this is that I'm usually left carrying all the bits and pieces home for them. I'm thinking I need to try making one of these cool nature explorer bags from Chez Beeper Bebe.

This little guy, created especially for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and available in the JPL Store, is an adorable tiny replica of the Mars Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, and is now being made available to you! It fits in the palm of your hand and is carefully crafted from recycled / upcycled circuit boards, Swarovski crystal rhinestones, fuses, and integrated circuit chips.

It's not well known but one of the best views in Seattle is from the Observation Deck of the Columbia Tower (one of our skyscrapers). To get there you take a bank of elevators up to one floor and transfer over to another bank of elevators and, hold on, what do you find as you're walking past? A Starbucks! A Starbucks with a pretty great view.

Above is one of the first views that greets you from the Observation Deck. I've circled the Space Needle in orange to show you how tiny it seems from the Columbia Tower. See? Cute.

Here is the proof of the Starbucks. It's free to get up to it, by the way.

To get to the observation deck you take the bank of elevators in the North Lobby to the 40th floor, pass by that Starbucks, then take those elevators to the 73rd floor. Follow the signs to the left. It's about $5 per person to get in and then you find yourself looking down at the Space Needle, which is pretty cool. The views are nearly 360 degrees and on a clear day you can see all the surroundings mountains. It's far cheaper than the Space Needle, involves a whole lot less waiting and zero souvenir photographs. (The Space Needle, though, does have glass elevators and a rotating restaurant.) It's one of my favorite places to bring visitors. And not just to show off that yes we really do have Starbucks everywhere.

How-To: Sturdy Milk Crate Storage

CZ_OrganizeIt.gif

craftzine_milk_crate_organizers_07_b.jpg

My closet is a disaster. It's the only closet in my house, and it has been over capacity since the day I moved in. There's space to hang coats and dresses, but my shoes, hats, scarves and belts were ending up trampled on the floor. I was dreaming of an extravagant custom built shelving unit, when a friend suggested quick and dirty cinder block shelves. I instantly thought of stacking milk crate shelves, but realized I could maximize space if I hung them from the wall.

I picked up some drywall anchors and big fat washers at the hardware store, and was able to hang my crates up in 15 minutes. Using drywall anchors means you don't have to find a stud in the wall, and these are removable too, so they can be taken down later without ruining the wall. The anchors are rated to hold 75 pounds each, and I easily installed them myself. The anchor "activates" by grabbing the flat end of the screw, so to provide is room for the crate and the washer to sit snugly, choose screws that are half an inch longer than the anchors. I've written about drywall anchors before, and I promise that after you get comfortable with them, you will feel empowered tackle all sorts of DIY projects that seemed out of reach.

Papier-Mache Easter Eggs

[1]

For Easter I made papier-mache polka dotted eggs.

[2]

I made small pinatas using water balloons and tissue paper.

[3]

I filled them with candy, then sealed them shut.

[4]

You can also put toys or notes inside.

[5]

They have to be ripped to open them, which is way fun.

a few things

Earlier this month Product Body [1] offered a discount code and a few people had some trouble, so she's fixed it up and extended the deadline through the end of June. Enter NOTMARTHA15 for 15% off when you?re checking out. Valid for everything on the site except the Scrub of the Month club, use as often as you'd like.

I'll also mention that School House Craft [2] is still offering 20% off for any ticket combination to the conference. Enter notmartha when you buy your tickets. This will be good up until the event (in September!).

And finally there is a pretty neat thing happening here in Seattle this Thursdsay, June 16th:

Moveable Type coming to Seattle's Central District!
June 16th, 5-8pm
at Miss Cline Press shop
2370 East Cherry (cherry & 23rd ave)

Join us for a printing party to welcome the Moveable Type national tour on its first stop in Seattle.

Moveable Type is a mobile print shop built into the back of an old delivery truck. The truck is owned by Kyle Durrie, the proprietor of Power and Light Press in Portland, Oregon. Kyle is starting a 9+ month tour across North America. The idea is to combine her two passions of traveling and printing. Now, the truck is ready and the adventure is just beginning. Her first stop in Seattle will be in the heart of Central District at Miss Cline Press shop.

During her trip, Kyle will be visiting schools, art spaces, city parks, music and arts festivals, craft shows, parties, and anywhere else that has an interest in learning about printing the old fashioned way.

Moveable Type will be setting up its mobile print shop outside Miss Cline Press on Thursday, June 16th for an evening of printing demos, studio/truck tours, and tall tales about life on the road. This event is free and open to the public, and participants can expect to get their hands dirty and make a few prints to take home with them.

A priceless opportunity! Hope to see you there.

May Birthday Giveaway: goods from Schmancy

Today I'm happy to have a selection of goods from Schmancy [1], a tiny but super awesome shop here in Seattle (which you should visit if you are anywhere nearby). Schmancy is owned and run by Kristen Rask, author of books [2], runner of Urban Craft Uprising [3], creator of School House Craft [4] and general powerhouse. In a happy coincidence Schmancy launched a new website just yesterday, lookin' good.

The package from Schmancy includes a zipper pouch and strawberry magnet hand made by Kristen herself and three collectible items from her shop: a Dunny 2010 Series from Kid Robot, one City Critters from Mindstyle (all designs are from Jim Henson's sketchbook!) and a Droplets are from Crazy Label. Nice! To win please leave a comment with this entry and if you'd like answer this question: See that rainbow patch on the zipper pouch? It makes feel nostalgic. Have you ever collected patches as a kid? I'll go first: I had a few patches from when I was a Brownie (which didn't last all that long), and I used to go through my mom's collection of patches because they were so colorful. You've got until Thursday, May 12th at 10am to enter, the fine print [5] applies. Ok, good luck! Closed, thanks so much for entering!

May Birthday Giveaway: Grow Great Grub

Today I've got a copy of Grow Great Grub [1]: Organic Food from Small Spaces by Gayla Trail. This book has a perfect combination of the information you need to grow your own food in containers, planting beds or community gardens, what to plant, how to care for it, and heaps of beautiful photographs to inspire you. I'm very intimidated by gardening and I find this book to be comforting. She covers everything I might like to grow but doesn't bury me in too many options. There are even recipes, tips on keeping or preserving and a section on how to can. This book is both a great place to start, and has lots of information for those gardeners who are looking to polish their food growing skills. And if you don't already follow it Gayla's site You Grow Girl [2] is full of great information. Gayla is one of those people whom I've known online for years and years. (I find myself saying that a lot lately!)

If you'd like to win a copy of You Grow Girl please leave a comment with this post. You've got until Tuesday, May 17th at 10am PST to enter, the fine print [3] applies. Here is something to talk about if you'd like: Have you ever eaten anything you grew yourself? I am terrible with plants so the most I've managed is using my own rosemary and thyme, but my dad is a gardener and grows blueberries and wild strawberries (which are delicious). Ok, good luck! Make: Live 6/22/11 — Photo and Video (video)

Make: Live episode 11 is all about photography and video. We take you on a behind-the-scenes tour and show how we put together Make: Live.

Matt Griffin from MakerBot shows us how they make timelapse movies of 3D printers doing their thing Catch up on video and notes from the show here.

Subscribe to the MAKE Podcast in iTunes, download Make: Live episode 11 in its entirety (m4v or Vimeo). Also check out the chat room transcript!

Show notes:

Some time lapse tips and tricks from Matt Griffin:
  • You need something that is fixed or moves slowly to "gel" the time lapse
  • Be careful of auto-exposure and auto-focus, as these kill illusion.
  • Sell realism by simulating camera moves -- s-curves and ease in/ease out help give the viewer a cinematic handling feel while direct lines feel kinda mechanical (security cameras)
  • Typically folks add music after the time lapse -- but if you pick music you like, you can make adjustments to the time lapse to connect it to (or work against) the music.
  • Shoot a big enough image to give you room for reframing -- but make sure the resolution for a tighter shot looks good enough for your needs.
  • Many time lapse/stop motion/intervalometer type tools can be hacked to be queued by something other than time. If you are recording something that changes over time, you can create a tool to trigger the shots that are interesting (motion sensing, tracking, sound sensing etc.)
  • Once you are done shooting, it is like you have a strip of film. You can use any number of batch file renaming or image processing tools to change parts or all of your sequence well before encoding it as video.
  • ou can "thin" out your time lapse to have only images doing what you want, and then use a batch file renaming tool to create a new consecutively numbered sequence of images.
Want to show us your project? Upload a video or photos and send a link to live@makezine.com.

Next show:
Make: Live 12: Robots
Wednesday July 13th, 9pm ET/6pm PT

May Birthday Giveaway: Made By Moxie

Today I have a wee finger puppet made by the amazing Moxie [1] for one lucky person. Moxie is a fiber artist and needle felting wool by hand is her usual (but not only) medium. She creates breathtakingly amazing sculptures, both large and small, some are lifelike and some hilarious while at the same time a bit heartbreaking. You can see some of her most recent work on her site: icons & totems & pieces of the past [2], a recent show in NYC, and her sets Hungry [3] and Hungry 2 [4] are hilarious. If you're interested in learning to needle felt keep an eye on her schedule, she teaches classes.

If you'd like win this sweet bit of the genius please leave a comment with this post. If you don't mind I'd love to know: Have you ever tried needle felting? I have, but I'm afraid it'll take a lot more practice for it to become something that could be called presentable. Ceramic Coasters are Maps of Oslo

oslo coasters 2.jpg

Each of these coasters by Anders Hansen is a map of a section of Oslo.

This project started with my fascination for city grids, from the strict geometry of New York to the seemingly chaotic Bombay structure. At the time, living abroad and feeling a bit homesick, and I decided to use the map of Oslo, Norway as a starting point.

Paper Tree Garlands

Paper tree garland.jpg

Look how ethereal and sweet these paper tree garlands are that I found over on Bloesom. A collaboration between Monique from studio-mhl and Frank from ijm studio for Inside Design 2010. I want a million of them lining my ceilings, they are just so lovely.

How-To: Make Your Own Infused Spirits

CZ_BookExcerpt_DIY-Cocktails.gif

tequila_fresapunch.jpg

By Marcia Simmons

Infusing spirits means putting stuff in a jar, pouring liquor on top of it, and waiting. That's really all there is to it. ?

Whether you want to make basil vodka, jalapeno tequila or mango rum, the general process is the same:

DIY Infused Spirit

Put equal parts spirit and flavoring item in a glass jar, seal the jar, and shake it. Let the infusion steep anywhere from one to seven days, depending on how quickly the ingredient imparts its flavor and how intense you'd like your infusion to taste. Sample daily. Strain out the solids through cheesecloth. Bottle and store as you would any other spirit.

You can make as little or as much as you want. I like to experiment with a variety of flavors in small batches in eight-ounce Mason jars.

Vodka is the easiest spirit for infusing, because it pairs well with literally any flavor. Don't limit yourself, though. Just remember that stronger-tasting spirits, like whiskey and Cognac, may need longer steeping times. You may even want to let it sit for weeks to get a really bold infusion. If you like, you can download a handy PDF infusion cheatsheet by clicking the link below.

Yarn Bombers Dress Up Vancouver for Mini Maker Faire

yarnbomb_vanc4.jpg

Vancouver BC's first Mini Maker Faire is this weekend, and to help build excitement for the event, a group of local knitters and crocheters joined forces to do a bit of yarn bombing on June 11th, which is also International Yarn Bombing Day. Using their fiber skills and teamwork, these 15 crafty activists beautified the city's Dunsmuir bike lanes with an installation of brightly colored knitting.

I talked with mastermind Emily Smith about how the project came together and what Vancouver thought about it.

Bakesale for Japan

[1]

A nationwide Bakesale for Japan [2] is being held and here in Seattle it will be at the Cakespy Shop [3]. They are currently looking for "bakers, artists, volunteers, and lots and lots of customers", if you think you can help see more details and get in touch here [4]. See you there!

experiments in Rainbow Cakes

This past St. Patrick's Day I made a Leprechaun Trap Cake [1], shown above, which revealed a nice rainbow shape inside each slice. I created the rainbow by pouring colored cake batter into an angel food cake pan one color on top of the other and it came out surprisingly well. (More details on the amounts of colored batter I used are in the original post [2].) At the time I wondered if doubling the recipe or using different cake pans would result in the same effect and I've made a half dozen cakes over the past month to find out. The results are below and it turns out the answer is "nope".

For each of the following cakes I used the same boxed white cake mix, the same gel food colorings and the same technique to layer the batter.

Two boxes of cake mix in an angel food cake pan. For my original cake I used one box of cake mix in this same angel food cake pan. Doubling the amount makes a big difference and the cake almost spilled over the top of the pan while baking. If I'd leveled this one I would have had a swoopy and uneven rainbow, but it would have been there.

Half a box of cake mix in a 6 inch round cake pan. This was my most successful test variation. The cake shown has been leveled and turned out onto a plate, each slice had half a rainbow.

One box of cake mix in a 6 inch round cake pan. I was hoping that the flat bottom of the cake pan with lots of batter would result in a tall rainbow, but instead I got something that looks more like a volcano. I didn't level this cake.

Half a box of cake mix in a 4.5 x 8.5 inch loaf pan. I hoped the flat bottom of a loaf pan would give me similar results to the bundt pan but the batter didn't quite behave the same way. I leveled this cake before cutting into it and didn't realize that the leveled top held all the blue and purple colors, so I put it back on for the sake of the picture.

One box of cake mix in a 4.5 x 8.5 inch loaf pan. Another loaf pan experiment this time with twice the batter, and another volcano like result.

Two boxes of cake mix in a round mixing bowl. Here again I was hoping a tall cake would result in a nice tall rainbow. I didn't get that but I did get some very impressive swirling down the center of the cake and back up around the sides of the bowl. The center of this cake never quite baked. A failure all around but it's pretty cool to see how the batter moves while it's baking.

My conclusion is that using less batter in a flat bottomed pan will more likely result in the rainbow arch I was hoping for. And that I got very, very lucky for the first version of this cake [3] that I made to come out so nicely. Call it the luck of the Irish?

How-To: "You Have Just Been Poisoned" Pint Glass

finsihed-outside-glass-bottom-closeup-600x450.jpg

Sean at MAKE has an awesome new project over on Make: Projects.

Fans of Patrick McGoohan's classic BBC spy series The Prisoner will recognize this gimmick from Episode 15, "The Girl Who Was Death." It's a pint glass with words etched on the bottom (in authentic "Village" font) that appear line-by-line as the liquid is imbibed. My version is the closest reproduction of the original I could achieve.

RSS Woes

Hi everyone. There is a bit of trouble with my RSS feeds. We moved some stuff around the other day and it broke something else, and when we went to fix it yesterday it seems to have truncated the posts in readers, which was not my intention. Hang on for a bit and we'll fix it. Sorry for the trouble and thanks for letting me know it was happening.

Tool Review: Silhouette Electronic Cutter

computersilhouette2.jpg

I recently got my hands on a Silhouette SD electronic cutter. It's a little computer-controlled craft robot with very sharp teeth! Use it to cut out designs for all sorts of things: paper crafts and scrapbooking, vinyl lettering, glass and metal etching, stencils, and anything else that involves precision cutting of small planar materials. There's some pretty neat stuff out there: sticky vinyl, flocked vinyl, magnet sheet, even temporary tattoo paper.

silhouette-midsummerlight.jpg

I really like this lamp Meg Allan Cole has hanging in her living room-- it's the Midsummer Light by Dutch designer Tord Boontje. I found a flat-ish picture of the design online and traced over it in Adobe Illustrator, setting to cut out some delicate flowers. Hit the jump for the results, the rest of the review, and a discount coupon code for the machine.

Happy Father's Day!

etchedfathersdayglasses_main2.jpg

Oh behalf of our entire CRAFT team, Happy Father's Day to all the dads, stepdads and father figures out there. I was on Wikipedia researching when this holiday is celebrated in other parts of the world, and found this poignant story of the first U.S. Father's Day:

The first observance of Father's Day actually took place in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. It was organized by Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton, who wanted to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had been lost in the Monongah Mining disaster several months earlier in Monongah, West Virginia. It's possible that Clayton was influenced by the first celebration of Mother's Day that same year, just a few miles away. Clayton chose the Sunday nearest to the birthday of her recently deceased father.

My goodness. Give your dad a hug (or a call) today, and if you hurry, you can even whip him up a set of pint glasses etched with your silhouette!
